The Dr Lakes Racers Australia is the webpage of organisation responsible for putting together SpeedWeek at lake Gairdner every year. The Dry Lakes Racers Australia held it's first Speed Trials in the March of 1990 and has been doing so (weather permitting) ever since. It has attracted competitors from all over Australia, the United States of America, New Zealand and the UK.The enormous salt lakes found in the outback of Australia have produced the ideal surface for land speed racing and are unquestionably the best in the world and there have been many World records set by special attempts by individuals. However it is only in the relatively recent past that regular organised meeting have been held for clubs to participate in Land Speed Racing. This is similar to the events held at Bonneville, El Mirage and Muroc in the US. Well Worth a look.
DMCMS is the content management system software that this website uses. The software was written by me, and is a development of the previous incarnation of this (the T-34) website. After redesigning this website, partly as it needed an update and partly to develop a generic software system that could be used for other websites, I decided to release the software as open source under the GNU GPL License. This means that not only is the software free to use, but it is also free to modify providing the rules of the GPL are adhered to. Nowdays this site is used as a testbed for new DMCMS releases - that's why it looks conspiciously more than a little bit like the DMCMS site.
If you are after a content management system to use on your website you can take DMCMS for a test-drive by visiting the demo site from the link above.
Sourceforge is the worlds largest open-source software website hosting over 100,000 projects including DMCMS. It has ove one million members and is host to some of the best known projects on the web and development communities. Sourceforge provides free hosting to open source projects as well as many other services.
I stumbled across this link whilst researching some code for DMCMS. reCAPTCHA is a site developed to make better use of the 'Captcha' security devices utilised on most web sites. Captcha's are those pictures with distorted words that you need to type into a box to validate your submission when posting information on the web. They are used to prevent spam by trying to prevent automated scripts from posting information. The basic idea behind reCAPTCHA is that it uses Captchas to convert text scanned from books (the captcha picture) by validating and then storing the result - thus allowing books that cannot be recognised with OCR software to be converted into the digital format. A great idea! To see this in effect - simply click on my email address above
Firefox is my personal choice for web-browsing. It is an open source cross platform product with a large support community providing excellent security and 3rd party plugins all for free. I use Firefox as part of my development platform for developing web based software such as DMCMS, I utilise plugins such as the FireFTP client, Firebug debugging plugin and Chatzilla for IRC. Firefox is also available for the Mac.
FireFTP is an FTP Client plugin for Firefox. It's a great plugin that works really well. I use FireFTP for both web based stuff and also systems programming. For web stuff it's perfect as it is integrated with the browser and is never futher than a click away. FireFTP is free, it lacks some of the functions of other clients like file compare but who cares when it doesn't cost you a cent.
Firebug is a Firefox plugin I use for troubleshooting the webpages that I develop. It has an excellent DOM inspector and also tools for javascript debugging, CSS monitoring and HTML editing. If you are into writing web pages - I would reccomend this tool. Take a look at their web page for a full rundown on it's functions.
45-Degrees is a Scooter enthusiasts site dedicated to classic scooters and the Mod scene. If you're a Vespa or Lambretta owner, have a thing for accessories or maybe are into the Northern Soul movement then this site is worth a look. (Plus it is run by a good mate of mine)
HazCalc is a software based risk assessment / hazard management solution that I wrote. It is fully configurable and produces some nice statistical and prioritised reports that can be used to put risk management / limitation solutions into action. HazCalc is designed to take the guesswork out of hazard identification and risk scoring by implimenting task based hazard identification and standards compliant risk scoring systems.
Carters Classic Scooters is run by an Adelaide guy who happens to have bought up all the local stocks of classic Vespa spares - a handy contact if you need to find stuff. It was also the place that I found out about the 60th anniverssary Lambretta run (See Media/Events pages for photos).
