This weekend I dropped all of the engine parts down to Jim who's assembling it for me, we had a long discussion about exactly how the engine would be assembled, and also the modifications that needed to be done to make it the correct configuration. There are lots to consider when planning a build like this one, especially as far as the oil system is concerned, one bad decision at this stage can mean a lot of heartache later-on when you have to strip the engine to have the case machined for an oil return because you didn't consider it before. The engine should hopefully be finished by the end of January, this should leave me enough time to sort out the plumbing before Sandown, hopefully all else will be finished by then.
I fitted the roof on the Sunday, and was only hampered by the spot welder blowing fuses, I'll have to push the car up to the house next weekend to finish the welding off. see the pictures page for a more detailed report.
After reaching a standstill due to the blowing fuses I decided to trial fit the engine and box to see how things lined up. all looked good, with only a small modification needed to the under pan to clear the gearbox nose, this was something I had not expected, but goes to show how important it is to keep checking and re-checking when carrying out a conversion like this.
I also took the time to fit the Porsche brakes and hubs onto the front spindles. The first main difference is that the bearings are different sizes, information on the adaptors that need to be made to fit the hubs is freely available on the web, as this is a conversion that has been carried out before. The brake callipers will need to have adaptors made before they will fit onto the spindles, this doesn't appear to be too much of a problem, it looks like a piece of 1 inch square stock will be nearly perfect, threaded to take the calipers and counter-bored to mount to the spindles. Again, check out the photos page for some piccies.
