Suspension Ideas

As per usual the site has not been updated for quite some time, this is also a reflection on the amount of work that's been done too - there's been a lot going on in my household so work on the car has been limited, but things are progressing - just about.

The engine has had the most progress made on it - this is probably because someone else is doing the work. I've had a special flywheel made up so that a 911 clutch can be mounted to it - originally I had a steel 914 flywheel with a high pressure clutch assembly but decided to change it so that a 911 clutch and release bearing could be utilised, This makes life a whole lot easier and has the benefit of using a bigger more powerful clutch.

I modified a crank trigger wheel to fit the front of the fan pulley, this is used to trigger the EFI unit, I purchased the trigger wheel from DTA and the machined it to be bolted to the pulley, there are some pictures of it on the pictures page.

After having a few thinks and re-thinks I am left undecided about what to do with the front suspension and brakes, my original idea of converting the Porsche hubs to fit the VW spindles leaves a lot to be desired as far as suspension geometry is concerned, Dropped spindles would cure the problem but as of yet these are only available for the Type 1. There is a guy in Belgium who has made his own, this is something I am tempted to do myself utilising both the Porsche and VW spindles (you need 2 spindles to do the mod) but the strength of a modification like this gives me concern (potentially the car could be capable of speeds in excess of 150 mph).

Another option is to change the front beam to a Type 1 item and junk the torsion leaves in favour of free-moving arms and coil-overs, this will allow me to use the dropped spindles and thus overcome the geometry problem. The guy from Ricola racing (link on links page) has done a similar thing to his 356, something else quite radical that he has also done is to convert his Type 14 Ghia to a double wishbone front end - I don't think he managed to get it fully finished but it is quite spectacular and has given me a bit of food for thought.
Other ideas have revolved around a McPherson type setup so that the Porsche spindle can be utilised. I think I may initially go with my original idea as all of the others will involve some. considerable work, I would do this with a view to changing it later or in the hope someone will make dropped spindles for the Type 3

I've decided on the paint colour - Porsche Silver - a nice non-descript plain colour, with a silver - grey interior to match. I've got the carpets and headliner, and have found someone to trim the interior (ok ok - so I was going to do all this work myself but my current situation just does not allow this as I just don't have the time).

By far the biggest thing I have done for the car is to make some garage doors to allow me to get the thing out of the garage, something I've been meaning to do for quite some time now, this has allowed me to get it out in the open and take a few pics of it not in the garage (it hasn't been outside for about 6/7 years). Nice to see the thing moving - even if I only pushed it.
