A happy new year to all our visitors.
It's now just two weeks into the new year and I have so far managed to keep all my resolutions. One resolution was to spend more time fixing the Ghia up - in fact I think I promised myself to get it finished this year (yeah I know - I promise myself this every year - lol) well so far so good - I've managed to reassemble the 915 gearbox.
Regular readers will recall that Australia Post lost a vital component from the gearbox that I wasn't able to easily replace. I finally tracked down a part when I went back to the UK last September. For whatever reason that's about the last thing I did on the Ghia. But, with renewed vigour, this weekend I spent Saturday cleaning out the garage, clearing some space and Sunday reassembling the gearbox.
With the gearbox back together I now need to figure out how to operate the clutch. VW's normally use a cable that pulls the release arm - the 915 box requires the release arm to be pushed, this requires a little modification to get it to work. My initial thoughts are to swing the arm around 180 degrees so that it sits out to the side of the gearbox rather than underneath it (this is possible as the release arm shaft is splined and so the release arm can be set at any angle) the arm can then be pulled. All I would then need to do is to fabricate a bracket to fix the Saco hydraulic clutch slave cylinder to. In theory this seems to work, maybe next weekend I will fabricate a mockup and try it out.
Other things on my immediate list of things to do are getting the engine mounted in the car - to do this I still need to make a rear engine bar up and fabricate some rear engine mounts - at least with the box finally back together I can now do this.
