Chroming Back!

I was unfortunately let down on the 944 suspension and brakes, my new contact had arranged to get the stuff supplied by someone he knew, but was let down himself, he then put me in touch with a another guy who has now supplied me with all of the parts that I needed. (You can see some pictures of the stuff on pictures page 5). I now have all of brakes and suspension waiting to be fitted.

I have some different wheels on order that are far more suited to the car (well in my opinion, anyway), the only problem with these is that they may increase the track of the rear of the car. it is a good job that I have decided to go with different wheels, as the 16" Fuchs will not fit on the front hubs as they rub on the brake caliper (check Pictures page 5 for a photo of the calipers), As far as I am aware, this leaves the later style wheels (cup / design 90 etc...) as being the only ones that will fit as they have a different offset, but these look too modern for my liking.

The crank and rods have arrived from Scat in remarkable time considering they were to be shipped by sea. The barrels and pistons are to be picked up at Bug Jam this weekend, along with a dry sump oil pump and a straight-cut cam gear set. I also need to try and pick up some suspension rubbers for the IRS suspension, everywhere I have tried so far has been out of stock, this is stopping me from getting the measurements I need to modify the IRS as I cannot locate the A-arms correctly on the beam without them. The chrome-work has also been picked up from the chromer's, and a fine job he has done too, there's some small blemishes on one or two pieces, but then it was in a pretty bad state when I took it to him, I would definitely recommend him. I've dropped off a few more parts that I missed last time, and some more bits from Karen's Ghia. Look on the pictures page to see some shots of the stuff I have got back. I've included a link to his site for anyone who is interested

The swing axle suspension with gearbox has been removed and sold on to someone who will use it, I have stripped down the IRS unit, and have trial fitted the 944 trailing arms, it looks like the whole rear end is going to be about 2 inches wider than the body. What I have to do now is to narrow the rear end by about 3 inches (1 and 1/2 inches per side). I'm still trying to work out a good solution. One idea I have had is to make some modified spring-plates, this will then require that the A-arm pivot bush housings are cut off and re-welded further in on the beam. If this is successful I might male up some more modified spring-plates to sell, but it all depends on how how much work is involved.

I made a start on the sunroof section and have nearly removed the skin, it has taken quite a while to drill out all of the spot welds and carefully prize the skin off without damaging it. (some photos on photo page 5) just a little more work and it will be ready to fit.

I have contacted a mobile blast cleaning company who are going to clean the underneath of the pan for me, I'm then going to paint it, before refitting the suspension and steering components back up. I will keep you posted on how it comes out.
