I have now fitted the Porsche rear suspension, it took a lot of working out, but as I didn't want to get it wrong and risk the cost of having to buy any of the parts again, I didn't mind the time involved, there is a full tech article on the tech page outlining the procedure.
We took a visit to Bug Jam to enjoy the racing and atmosphere, and had a bit of luck finding some parts, I managed to find an original radio for the Ghia, and also get all of the bits I needed to finish the rear suspension install. We bumped into the guy who bought the silver Ghia from me, he told me how he was nearing the end of a full on resto. He'd managed to find some pretty awful repairs that had been carried out be the guy who last fixed the car up, the whole thing was practically held together with glass fibre and filler. Evidently when taking the car back to bare metal, whilst sanding the rear panel some filler was discovered, ok, not a crime in itself, so they decided to sand the filler out and repair whatever it was that the filler was hiding. They kept sanding, and sanding, until eventually it was discovered that the car had been involved in a rear end shunt, but instead of at least trying to hammer out most of the dent, it had simply been filled on with filler. Evidently the wheel arches were a real work of art, someone had gone through the trouble of cutting out small 1 inch pieces of metal, and then welding these 'mosaic' fashion all around the wheel arches, why? the work that must have gone into doing this was probably ten times as much as it would have taken to do it properly. Still, a friend of his is busy restoring the bodywork, and it should soon be finished. He has fabricated new front replacement wings, and done a lot of other bodywork as well, I am led to believe that all that is left is to paint it. Another amusing thing that he said was that he has had to raise the suspension as he kept getting pulled over by the police, every time they would give him a seven day wonder to take the car to an MOT station to get it checked to make sure that the suspension was legal, fed up with all of this he has had the suspension raised.
