Lowered

The rear suspension is finished and installed, the gearbox cross-member mounts have been fabricated and welded onto it, and this leaves only a small amount of welding to be done. I've lowered the front suspension but have decided that it needs to be redesigned a bit, I was hoping on getting some dropped spindles as I heard a rumour that someone was about to start making them for type 3’s, but so far this seems to have been just that a rumour.

I’ve finally managed to get a camshaft on order, it took a bit of research to find out what spec is needed, this has now been decided and should be being ground and shipped out soon. When this arrives the engine build is being discussed and planned and should hopefully be ready for the New Year. I have decided to entrust this work to someone else, as although I’ve built some good strong engines in the past, they’ve never had this much money invested in them.

So things are taking shape, the car, for the first time in the six years I’ve had it, actually looks different, it’s new dropped stance has definitely cheered me up a bit as it looks more like it should, especially with the new wheels fitted, I can’t wait to get the front suspension sorted and the new wheels on the front to see what it looks like then, with any project like this there is a long period of sourcing parts, doing mechanical work, cleaning bits up, welding etc. it’s not until you get to the stage where the paint goes on that it even looks like you’ve done anything, after having done a few cars now I have learned that it’s real easy to get disheartened as you don’t think you’re making progress, but you have to stick with it. After all you don’t want it to end up in the back of a magazine as an ‘unfinished project’.

The past months have seen lots of progress; in fact I’ve worked on it solidly to get it ready for the trip to Paintbox (in between going to Germany to do work for Mercedes). They were supposed to be taking the car in at the end of September, but then it was then put off till the end of this month, I spoke to Simon earlier in the week and unfortunately this date has been put back again. I’m going to carry on with the work myself until such time as he can fit it in, I’ll probably fit the roof myself, and depending on whether or not he’s ready to take the car in once I’ve reached the end of all I can do, I’ll do the paint as well. Either way it will be ready for Sandown Park in March

Next on the list is to fabricate the engine cross-member and engine mounts, this will allow me to trail fit the engine and box in place, then I can take some measurements for the drive shafts and get these made up, I'll also have to get this done before I send the engine off.
